The ANSI/ASSE Z244.1 Standard is widely accepted and respected as the defining document for addressing the complex issues of lockout, tagout, and methods for the control of hazardous energy. The Z244 Committee is moving in a new direction and contends that modern manufacturing requires the evaluation of complex situations where unique applications of energy control are both necessary and risk acceptable. The zero-risk blanket approach is outdated and in conflict with current safety management practice. The recent revision of Z244.1 is based on this tenet: the risk assessment guides hazardous energy control techniques and not one-size-fits-all. The committee believes this new approach is a game changer in the future for both the United States and globally. The Z244.1 Standard continues to grow in regards to implementation and public/private sector recognition. All OSH Professional either have, or will have during the course of their careers, responsibilities for the control of hazardous energy. Being knowledgeable of the ANSI/ASSE Z244.1 Standard should be a document OSH Professionals have expertise in.

OSHA Recordkeeping Standard and post-incident drug testing

I recently had a question concerning OSHA’s Recordkeeping standard with respect to employee injury reporting and discrimination by drug testing. Federal OSHA states the following:

“The rule does not prohibit drug testing of employees. It only prohibits employers from using drug testing, or the threat of drug testing, as a form of retaliation against employees who report injuries or illnesses. If an employer conducts drug testing to comply with the requirements of a state or federal law or regulation, the employer’s motive would not be retaliatory and this rule would not prohibit such testing.”
